Knee Replacement (Total)

When you talk about your kids and mention that things run in the family, you might think good grades, sports excellence  or even good looks. For me and my daughter, Danielle, it seems that joint problems run in our family!

Danielle was a dancer growing up and when she was 15 years old, we noticed some problems she was having with her right hip. Upon visiting Dr. Benton Emblom, we discovered that a ligament in her hip would click or pop when she extended it. So in June of 2013, she underwent surgery to cut that ligament to make it more elastic and help her hip extend without pain. Later that year, she was back at the doctor for some knee pain she was experiencing and underwent surgery in December of that same year to get knee ligament reconstruction in her right knee. Some time after that, she found herself having the same surgery on her left knee in September of 2014. You could say it was a crazy time.

Years passed and Danielle was having no trouble at all with either of her knees or her hip. But last year, she underwent surgery again to revise the reconstruction that had been done on her right knee. But now, she is better than ever! After finishing physical therapy last year, she went back to school at the University of South Alabama where she serves as chapter president of Alpha Gamma Delta.

During the time Danielle was having surgery, I was also discussed with Dr. Emblom about possibly having a partial knee replacement done in both of my knees. I had been suffering with pain for more than 10 years, but never really did much for it. I had also had surgery on my knee when I was 16 years old and had been living with a metal screw in my knee since then.

The pain got to the point to where I decided to go for the partial replacements and went to see Dr. Emblom where I was told I wouldn't have to worry about getting a partial and having to get it redone because it looked like both of my knees needed to be totally replaced. So in June of 2017, I had my right knee done, and my left knee quickly followed in September that same year.

Overall, life now is pretty good. My recovery took a bit longer than usual due to my job requiring to be on my feet for many hours during the day walking on concrete. But I’m still getting stronger and stronger each day.

My daughter and I would like to thank Dr. Emblom and his team for making us feel brand new and we would especially like to spotlight Dr. Emblom’s assistant, Alexis, for helping my daughter through the times she was in their care. They formed a special bond and helped Danielle feel much more comfortable and much better and we can’t thank her and Dr. Emblom enough.
