My name is Kirby Farris, I am originally from Lynn, Alabama, but I have lived in Birmingham for many years after moving to the city for law school.
My interest in law began at a young age while working for a railroad. I witnessed a colleague suffer a traumatic injury at work and was struck by the legal proceedings that followed, as well as the care shown by the lawyers involved. Now, I am a Managing Partner at Farris, Riley & Pitt, LLP, where I focus on railroad litigation, the Fair Labor Standards Act, personal injury, and wrongful death cases. Outside of my legal work, I enjoy spending time at the lake with my wife, kids, and grandchildren.
I've been involved in sports since childhood. Growing up as one of five boys raised by a single mother, sports provided a great way to stay engaged. I played tennis at Auburn University for a year and then continued my college career at the University of North Alabama. Since then, I’ve made it a priority to stay physically active.
Two years ago, I began experiencing pain in my right hip, which progressively worsened and affected my quality of life. I found it difficult to sleep, struggled to tie my shoes, could not sit for long periods, and had trouble walking. Eventually, the pain became so severe that my left hip started to ache as well. Despite trying anti-inflammatories, physical therapy, and home exercises, nothing alleviated the discomfort.
One day, while at Andrews Sports Medicine for work, a doctor noticed that my walk had become more of a wobble. They offered to fit me in for an x-ray that same day. The x-ray revealed a congenital defect in which my femur was not properly tapered into my hip joint, leading to a referral to Dr. David Moore, a total joint replacement specialist.
I scheduled an initial appointment with Dr. Moore and he determined that I needed a total right hip replacement. I was understandably nervous, given the amount of information I didn’t know. Dr. Moore took the time to explain the procedure thoroughly and kept me informed at every step of my journe. He understood the stress of the situation and did his best to reassure me.
The surgery went perfectly, and I immediately felt a tremendous sense of relief. I hadn’t realized how much pain I had been in until it was gone. My life improved instantly. I could sleep through the night, walk normally, and feel like my life had returned to normal.
Dr. Moore’s staff and everyone at Andrews Sports Medicine were exceptional. They recognized my pain and went out of their way to assist me even before I became a patient. It was clear they genuinely care about their work. They provided outstanding care at every step and were always willing to listen to my questions and concerns.
If I could offer anyone advice, it would be not to wait. If you notice something is wrong with your body, take action. I waited two years to seek proper treatment, unaware of how much pain I had been enduring because it developed gradually. We have some of the top orthopedic surgeons right here in Birmingham, and I encourage anyone to visit them. They can truly help you at Andrews Sports Medicine.
Thanks to Dr. Moore, I can now return to my work and enjoy the activities I love, including spending time at the lake, hunting, fishing, and, most importantly, being with my family.
