Conditions + Treatments
I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my early 40's and had experienced debilitating hip pain that interfered with my daily activities, work and leisure time. I couldn't sleep at night because of the pain and relief seemed impossible. I couldn't do many of my day-to-day activities and it was truly depressing.
After several years and talking to numerous surgeons, I finally found Dr. James Flanagan. He was the first surgeon to suggest the anterior approach to hip replacements. I had never heard of it and liked the fact that I would be able to go back to work quicker and with fewer restrictions. He was the first surgeon to give me an inkling of hope. I was determined to be active again and desperate for a chance to be a participate again and not just an observer sitting on the sidelines and watching.
I went on to have my first hip replaced at age 50 and the second one a year later. It was the best decision I ever made and took a lot of therapy, prayer and determination. Now that both surgeries are behind me, I once again lead an active lifestyle and can keep up with my grandchildren! In February of 2016 I ran my first ever 5k in the Pensacola Florida Double Bridge Run. I also do crossfit.
To anyone that has ever thought that your active lifestyle is over, I just want to encourage you not to give up because I truly believe with faith, willpower and the right team of doctors, you can come back stronger than ever. I pray that I inspire someone!
