Q: Congratulations on receiving this opportunity, could you give us an overview on where you are traveling and what you will be doing?

Kim: Thank you! It's a very exciting opportunity. You get to visit and learn from three of the most esteemed orthopedic institutes in all of the world: Hospitals for Specialty Surgery in New York City, Washington University in St Louis, and Virginia Mason in Seattle. We take a couple of days at each facility, learning hand in hand with some of the top spine and minimally invasive spine surgeons in the world! We get to learn their clinical practices, learn workflow, their indications, and pick their brain in general. This will allow us to enhance the treatments that we can offer here at home. The fellowship concludes with a podium talk at the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (SMISS) annual meeting in Las Vegas.

Q: What was the application process like for this type of fellowship?

Kim: Well there are only three people selected across the country every year so you have to go through a very rigorous application process with letters of recommendation as well as your CV. It truly is an is truly an honor to be selected

Q: What is the official timeline that you will be out of office?
Kim: I’ll be participating in the traveling fellowship from the end of August to the beginning of September and that will conclude at the annual meeting with a podium talk in the beginning of September. In total I will be gone August 25th through September 7th. Unfortunately my clinic will be closed during this time, but thankfully I have very talented colleagues and employees that are helping me get through the two weeks.

Q: What are you most excited about?

Kim: I'm excited to see what the forefront of minimally invasive spine surgery is and how it's being practiced by some of the leading surgeons in the world at these institutions. Here I'll get to get an inside peek on the top procedures, technology and practices, as well as the research that's being performed at these leading institutions, and bring them home to our practice here in Birmingham and to our patients here at Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center.
