WHAT STUDENT-ATHLETES SHOULD EXPECT AT THEIR HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS PHYSICIAL
THE IMPORTANCE OF SPORTS PHYSICIALS
In the state of Alabama, all students who desire to play a high school sport are required by the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) to have a sports physical (also called a pre-participation physical examination or PPE) to ensure they are physically and medically fit to participate in athletic activities.
For decades, Andrews Sports Medicine, the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI), and more recently ATI Physical Therapy, have collaborated on an annual basis to provide sports physicals free of charge to high schools in Central Alabama.
In 2024, our organizations provided 15,000+ free sports physicals to area student athletes. We are thankful for all of the medical professionals both within and outside of our organization that helps coordinate and assist with this tremendous undertaking. This includes administrative staff, athletic trainers, doctors, medical assistants, and nurses.

High school students are typically required to have sports physicals (also called pre-participation physical examinations or PPEs) to ensure they are physically and medically fit to participate in athletic activities. These physicals serve several important purposes:
1. Identify Health Risks: The physical helps identify any underlying medical conditions, such as heart issues, asthma, or previous injuries, that could pose a risk during physical activity.
2. Promote Safety: By evaluating a student’s overall health, the exam ensures they can safely engage in the physical demands of their chosen sport. It also helps prevent injuries or medical emergencies during practices or games.
3. Detect Chronic Conditions: Conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, or musculoskeletal issues can be identified and managed to avoid complications.
4. Provide Clearance: Sports physicals often provide a formal medical clearance for participation, which schools and athletic associations may require for liability and safety reasons.
5. Opportunity for Preventive Care: These exams give healthcare providers a chance to discuss injury prevention, nutrition, mental health, and other aspects of wellness with young athletes.
6. Compliance with Legal and Organizational Policies: Many schools and sports organizations mandate physicals as a precaution and to meet insurance or legal requirements.
