In this edition of PA Spotlight, we introduce to you, Katie Hutto, PA-C. Katie shares details about her career at Andrews Sports Medicine, working alongside Dr. Emily Bell Casey and Dr. Andrew Cordover, and her life in Birmingham, AL.
Katie Hutto, PA-C
Katie started working at Andrews Sports Medicine in January of 2024 as a physician assistant for Dr. Emily Bell Casey and Dr. Andrew Cordover. Her skills are utilized in a clinic setting as a provider for both physicians and in the operating room with surgeries for Dr. Cordover. She assists Dr. Casey with seeing patients in clinic with acute injuries and assists Dr. Cordover with spine surgeries.
She attended Harding University in Searcy, AR and completed both her undergraduate degree in biology and her Master's in Physician Assistant Studies. She also completed a variety of clinical rotations in sports medicine and orthopaedics, internal medicine, family and pediatrics, and primary care. Her most recent rotation was done at Andrews Sports Medicine under Jenny Degnan, MPAS, PA-C, ATC.
Katie is married to her husband Mason, and they recently welcomed a yellow lab, Goose to their family. When she isn't working, she enjoys going on walks, reading, and spending time with her husband and their dog.
WHERE DID YOU GROW UP AND DID YOU PLAY ANY SPORTS AS A KID? IF SO, WHICH ONES?
I was born and raised in Conyers, Georgia and lived there until I moved to Searcy, Arkansas when I was 18 years old. My clumsy self tried many sports (unsuccessfully) before I was 6, including soccer, gymnastics, and ballet. When I was 6, I finally picked up a softball for the first time, and I did not put it down until I was 22. I was blessed to play travel softball, school softball, and college softball at Harding University.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.
As an only child, I am extremely close with my parents John and Debbie. I was blessed to marry my best friend Mason, and we recently welcomed in a goofy gremlin of a yellow lab named Goose into our family.
What do you enjoy most about your career?
I absolutely love what I do. I consider it the highest honor to be trusted with people’s care. Throughout my life, I have had multiple orthopaedic problems that brought me into contact with PAs. Each interaction I had with a PA involved being listened to, understood, and had someone who would team up with me to get me better. After these encounters, I knew I wanted to be able to do the same thing for other people who were in my shoes.
Looking ahead to your career, what do you hope to bring to Andrews Sports Medicine?
I hope that I can use my personal experiences as a former injured athlete to provide empathy to my patients. I also hope that my personal experience as a patient and as a provider will allow me to help my teams as best I can to provide the best patient care possible.
What do you like most about working with Dr. Casey and Dr. Cordover?
Both Drs. Casey and Cordover are the most caring and compassionate physicians for their patients. They show empathy and understanding for patients and their conditions. They take care of patients by looking at them holistically, and how we can best treat each aspect of a patient’s life to provide quality care. They are always looking to learn something new, and that is inspiring as their new PA.
What do you like about the work culture at Andrews Sports Medicine?
I absolutely love the teamwork involved at ASM. Each member of a doctor’s team has independent roles that work with each other to provide the best patient care possible.
What are some challenges of working as a PA?
I find the most challenging part of working as a PA is that some patients don’t understand what our role is. On the flip side, my favorite part of this misunderstanding is having the opportunity to educate patients about my role and show them how we can work together to fulfill their health goals.
What is your favorite place to go in Birmingham?
I absolutely adore the coffee shop Bitty and Beau’s in Homewood. Their mission is to provide an employment opportunity to those with developmental and intellectual disabilities through working in a coffee shop. Not only is their coffee some of the best I’ve ever had, but it is truly amazing to be a part of such a wonderful community.
WHere do you and your family like to Vacation?
My family and I absolutely love going to Gulf Shores for a little beach get-away. However, my heart lies in the mountains, and some of my favorite places include Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and Denali National Park in Alaska.
