In this edition of PA Spotlight, we introduce to you, Madison Kirk, PA-C. Madison shares details about her career at Andrews Sports Medicine, working alongside Dr. Charles Carnel , and her life in Birmingham, AL.

Madison Kirk, PA-C

Madison started working at Andrews Sports Medicine as a Physician Assistant for Dr. Carnel in October 2024.

She attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) for her undergrad in Biology. She then went on to complete her Masters in Physician Assistant Studies at Samford University. She also completed a variety of clinical rotations ranging from dermatology, orthopaedics, and emergency medicine.

Madison is married to her husband Tristan, and they have 3 Golden Retrievers. When she isn't working, she enjoys training her dogs, going to antique stores, and baking. Madison and her husband also enjoy going to the beach.

WHERE DID YOU GROW UP AND DID YOU PLAY ANY SPORTS AS A KID? IF SO, WHICH ONES?

I grew up in Rainbow City, AL which is a small town near Gadsden. I did gymnastics and played soccer when I was little. I rode horses through middle and high school, which was always my favorite!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.

My husband, Tristan, and I met through mutual friends in 2017 and have been married since 2020. We have three Golden Retrievers, whom we adore! I have one sibling, my little sister Macy. She is a varsity cheerleader and has cheered since she was little. I am close with my parents and sister as well as my in-laws. I love when our families all get together because we have a great time! We usually have big get-togethers on Easter, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, and get competitive playing card games like Phase 10!

What do you enjoy most about your career?

I enjoy meeting patients from all different backgrounds, and I like the challenge of solving the mystery of what is bothering them. The best part of my career is getting to see patients who have healed and are able to get back to the things they enjoy! My goal is to always make a positive difference in our patients’ lives!

Looking ahead to your career, what do you hope to bring to Andrews Sports Medicine?

I hope to be a listening ear for patients and provide answers about what is causing their symptoms and options to alleviate them. Many of our patients have been dealing with physical issues for a prolonged period and may feel hopeless when seeking care from us. I want patients to know that we care and will do everything we feasibly can to help them feel better.

What do you like most about working with Dr. Carnel?

Dr. Carnel is knowledgeable and compassionate. I really enjoy working with him because I know he strives to do the right thing for patients and is an excellent teacher! He does a great job educating patients by explaining concepts in a straightforward way so they can be informed about their care.

What are some challenges of working as a PA?

It can be challenging when patients are unfamiliar with the role of PAs, but it gives me the perfect opportunity to educate them on how we are part of the healthcare team!

What is your favorite place to go in Birmingham?

Birmingham has a ton of great restaurants. Some of my local favorites are Troup’s Pizza, Urban Cookhouse, Oak House, and Cookie Fix. Besides that, I love going to my dogs' training classes in Homewood and visiting my favorite antique store, Brass Bear, in Hoover.

WHere do you and your family like to Vacation?

We love the beach! We often visit Destin, FL, and this year we went to Cape San Blas, FL for the first time. Cape San Blas is very dog-friendly, so we brought our dogs with us. We made priceless memories with them having a blast playing fetch on the beach and swimming in the ocean!
